Some poets changed not only the world but our way to conceive life.They belong to the Perpetual Time as time is perpetuating itself with or without us while we occupy an instant of this mysterious life space.
The poems of Federico Garcia Lorca changed the perception we had about Spanish life, people and aspiration for freedom during and after the Spanish Civil War (1936). He was solicited by Andre Breton to join the Surrealistic milieu in France but Lorca declined the offer. History will also retain Pablo Neruda’s works offering to South American poetry another aspect of expression not only innovative aesthetic views;

Who could imagine love expressed this way by a doubtful spirit: « Un seul cœur aura battu en nous qu’on entendra encore, nous disparus, dans le mystère du monde», wrote Albert Camus to Maria Casares*?.
Who could forget (the Prophet) Jubran Khalil Jubran (not Gibran or Jibran) who wrote first in Arabic, then he chooses to write in English, founding on his path the Diaspora Poetry Trend (Adab Al’Mihjar), as an expression of living in exile?. Lebanon used to be the native nest of Beshara Al’Khoury and Khalil Mottran, among other talented writers, editors and poets. Many other great Arab poets, almost unknown to the actual generations (Is somebody still reading poetry?!), contributed to change our way of perceiving the poetry: Aboul’Kassem Al’Shabi in Tunisia, Nezzar Quabbani in Syria and Kamel Al’Shennawi in Egypt and I am surely missing many other talents.
Nezzar Qabbani écrivit:
« Je t’aime
Sans réserve aucune
Je vis en toi
Ma naissance
Et mon anéantissement …
Je t’ai perpétrée

De ma propre
Volonté …

Nezzar Qabbani
Nezzar Quabbani est un puits sans fond. Il n’avait peur de rien ni de personne. Il n’a pas seulement innové la Poésie arabe du XXème siècle mais secoué toute une société hypocrite et vautrée dans ses fausses certitudes. Il a créé des expressions comme « Enfance d’un sein » et « Je jure qu’aucune femme n’a existé avant toi », et « j’ai conjuré mon sang pour toi », parmi d’autres. Il a dénoncé la lâcheté de ses contemporains à l’égard des femmes dans des poèmes comme « Enceinte » et « N’entre pas » et il était le premier poète à dénoncer l’impuissance arabe en 1967 lors de la Guerre des six jours. Ses poèmes politiques ont retenti comme un avertissement voire une puissante prédication. Son ultime chef d’œuvre, Balquis (en hommage à son épouse assassinée), est considéré comme un poème fleuve d’un genre nouveau qui mêla l’amour à la critique politique au souvenir et à l’élégie. Nezzar est un poète unique qui n’a connu de prédécesseur et n’aura jamais de successeur.
Egyptian Kamel El-Shenawy wrote: » I asked my brain. It listened and told me: « No, no.You will never see her. ». My heart said: » I see her and I will love nothing but her ». Afterwards, El-Shenawy cursed his heart and prohibited him from loving the one he loved. What is this expression of deprivation of the heart before depriving the soul? What is the ability of this love to rein on the soul? Perhaps the creative Beauty, the beauty that radiates light and expression. The unique ethereal beauty that God imposed on humans as a test. Another poet recalled : « Oh, night, I stayed up late, and the stars asked me about my news». Ahmad Rami**forgot that love remains love no matter how much time has destroyed humans.

Who read the legendary Mahmoud Darwich who reflected the Palestinian struggle for liberation and expressed his nation pride? All these poets marqued our painful and turmented XXth Century. Many other enlightened examples of visionary poets like Sedar Seghor from Senegal and the Martiniquese Aimé Césaire could honorably join the row.Who could better end this short evocation than the French Édouard Glissant, «one of the greatest contemporaries of the universal», wrote Jacques Cellard in Le Monde ?.

Then I wonder today, me, Poet of Two Worlds, who travels in the continuity of time: « is there a way that could lead me to this Light ? ».The answer is « Write! ».
